Bioclimatic Models in Entomology

چکیده

Because climate has such a profound effect on the distribution and abundance of invertebrates, quantification of climatic influences on insects has been of considerable interest to entomologists for well over a century. While simple predictive models were developed early on, easier access to computers in the 1970s resulted in the development of computer based models to predict the biotic potential of insects in relation to climate. Simple bioclimatic models are oft en used to predict population events so that control methods can be more precisely applied, reducing costs to the grower as well as insecticide use. Decreased insecticide use helps preserve natural enemies, reduces insecticide residues in crops, and delays the development of insecticide resistance. Other benefits are the conservation of petroleum products, increased safety to farm workers, local residents and the environment. Additionally, models of insect biotic potential and life cycle timing can increase the precision of sampling and monitoring programs, and application of biological control procedures. More complex bioclimatic assessment models have been designed to predict the potential establishment and distribution of insect species, often to assess the risk of invasion into areas where they are not normally found.

Climatic change can impose physiological constraints on species and can therefore affect species distribution. Bioclimatic predictors, including annual trends, regimes, thresholds and bio-limiting factors are the most important independent variables in species distribution models. Water and temperature are the most limiting factors in arid ecosystem in central Iran. Therefore, mapping of climat...

Methods and uncertainties in bioclimatic envelope modelling under climate change

Potential impacts of projected climate change on biodiversity are often assessed using single-species bioclimatic ‘envelope’ models. Such models are a special case of species distribution models in which the current geographical distribution of species is related to climatic variables so to enable projections of distributions under future climate change scenarios. This work reviews a number of ...

Machine Learning for Bioclimatic Modellin

Many machine learning (ML) approaches are widely used to generate bioclimatic models for prediction of geographic range of organism as a function of climate. Applications such as prediction of range shift in organism, range of invasive species influenced by climate change are important parameters in understanding the impact of climate change. However, success of machine learning-based approache...

Bioclimatic profile and potential distribution of the Mesopotamian harvestman Discocyrtus testudineus (Holmberg, 1876) (Opiliones, Gonyleptidae).

The geographic range of the Neotropical harvestman Discocyrtus testudineus (Holmberg, 1876) (Gonyleptidae) is addressed by determining the species' bioclimatic profile and modeling its potential distribution. Analysis was performed on a record set of 71 localities, including literature records and 34 new localities reported here. The bioclimatic profile was characterized through extreme, median...

Bioclimatic niches are conserved and unrelated to pollination syndromes in Antillean Gesneriaceae

The study of the evolution of abiotic niches can be informative regarding the speciation drivers in a given group. Yet, two factors that could potentially affect niche evolution have seldom been addressed concomitantly, which are biotic interactions and geographical isolation. In this study, we used as a model group the Antillean plant genera Gesneria and Rhytidophyllum (Gesneriaceae) to evalua...
